I got an email (an interoffice email) urging me (and the 600 other staff members at my agency) to attend one of two rallies protesting the continued incarceration of Mumia Abu-Jamal, former Black Panther and alleged cop killer.

I don’t know how I feel about the case.

…but protests are always a good time. How do these people manage to tie Communist rhetoric and “Free Puerto Rico” into a protest to get one motherfucker off of Philly’s death row?

Recommendations: Websites you should be reading

In recent weeks a site has popped up that has entertained me (and many others) greatly.

Stuff White People Like (http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com)

The site is excellent. Now it obviously doesn’t speak for all white people (don’t you fret double wide trailer resident, they aren’t talking about you), but it nails the white hipster/yupster/yuppie crowd right on the head. I happen to be friends with many people that fall in this group and I mean it’s SPOT ON.

A more recent site, Stuff Educated Black People Like, has popped up in the past week. And while not as entertaining as its predecessor, it still ends up making for a good read. Again it doesn’t fit all educated black people (I found myself only really falling into one category) but for a broad swatch of that population, it works.

We approve these sites, and so should you.

 

Personality Traits by City (we’re nervous in NYC, but we have no qualms about fucking our Asian stepdaughters).

In this book, Who’s Your City, Richard Florida examines why people choose to live where they do and (sort-of) gives city-choosing guidance. The book is largely worthless for my purposes, but one illustration really struck me…this map is based on the five dimensions of personality.

Look how few of these even touch NYC:

1. Openness – appreciation for art, emotion, adventure, unusual ideas, imagination, curiosity, and variety of experience.

2. Conscientiousness – a tendency to show self-discipline, act dutifully, and aim for achievement; planned rather than spontaneous behaviour.

3. Extraversion – energy, positive emotions, surgency, and the tendency to seek stimulation and the company of others.

4. Agreeableness – a tendency to be compassionate and cooperative rather than suspicious and antagonistic towards others.

5. Neuroticism – a tendency to experience unpleasant emotions easily, such as anger, anxiety, depression, or vulnerability; sometimes called emotional instability.

The author describes Woody Allen as the quintessential New Yorker; clearly not extroverted, agreeable, or conscientious. Very neurotic and very creative.
